The ghosts of General Fukakusa and Ono-no-Komachi appear before a monk in ascetic training. Even though they are both ghosts, General Fukakusa clings to the sleeve of Komachi, who tries to pull herself free of him.
梅若恭行、梅若靖記
Komachi agreed to accept the feelings of General Fukakusa if he visited her for one hundred nights. He holds on to his earthly desires for the woman, who wishes to receive the precepts of Buddhism. Now, they weep together.
金春晃実、金春穂高
In front of the monk, they reenact the one hundred nights of his visits. In deference to public opinion, General Fukukasa was forbidden to visit Komachi by ox cart, and he traveled under cover of darkness in a straw raincoat and bamboo hat.
金春晃実
Not every night was lit by the moon. At times, he had to wipe the snow from his sleeves. On dark and rain-swept nights, he would lose his bamboo hat and wonder if he would be eaten by demons.
狩野丹秀
Komachi waits for the moon, not for him. Her false words pierce him.
観世元昭
The number of nights comes to ninety-nine – one more to go! General Fukakusa stands dressed and ready. What will the new day bring?
