Akogi : PhotoStory

A traveling monk meets an old fisherman at Akogi-ga-ura beach in Ise Province (on the coast of present-day Tsu City, Mie Prefecture).

The old man relates the origins of Akogi-ga-ura. A fisherman called Akogi was punished for poaching fish by drowning at sea.

The old man asks the monk to hold a service for Akogi, who is suffering in hell. Is he the ghost of Akogi?

At dusk, the old man hauls his nets. A sudden gust of wind blows, darkness falls and the old man disappears between the waves.

At night, the traveling monk holds a service for Akogi. The ghost of Akogi appears, carrying his nets.

Akogi shows how he fished in a forbidden area. The waves turn into raging flames that attack him.

Akogi suffers the monstrous tortures of hell. Poisonous fish and venomous snakes chase him.

Ice tortures my flesh, my bones are crushed, and there is no escape from the burning flames. Traveler, save me!
